International Day of Solidarity with Belarusian Civil Society

4 August will mark the first anniversary of the arrest of Ales Bialiatski, one of the most well-known human rights defenders and prominent public figures in Belarus. Bialiatski is president of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” and the vice-president of the International Federation for Human Rights.

To commemorate this, The International Day of Solidarity with Civil Society and the Human Rights Movement in Belarus will be held on this date.

The Day has been initiated by the Committee on International Control over the Human Rights Situation in Belarus. Several Civic Solidarity Platform members joined the organising committee of this action and have planned several events within its framework. The initiative aims at drawing attention to the situation in Belarus and showing solidarity with those people who fight for their freedom under constant pressure and persecution.

Groups and activists concerned with the situation in Belarus are invited to support this initiative. Its manifesto and the list of possible activities in support of it can be found here.
