During the European Football Championship in Ukraine (Euro 2012) Civic Solidarity Platform members the Center for Civil Liberties (Ukraine) and People in Need (Czech Republic) will work together with the Human Rights Informational Center (Ukraine) to launch a campaign entitled “Human Rights – Out of the Game” to highlight the deteriorating rights situation in the country.
The information campaign will use the opportunity of media and popular attention on Ukraine during Euro 2012 to raise awareness about the erosion of fundamental freedoms. The campaign will highlight restrictions on the media, selective prosecution of opposition politicians and civil society activists, intrusive actions by the security services, and police torture of detainees.
In each of four Ukrainian cities participating in the EURO 2012 (Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kyiv and Lviv), a series of public performances will be organized to draw the attention of football (soccer) fans and the media to an exhibition presenting urgent human rights issues in Ukraine. The performances will be closely linked with football symbolism and will involve famous Ukrainian writers, poets and musicians.
