People in Need is an international humanitarian and human rights organization based in the Czech Republic, founded in 1992 on the principles of humanism, freedom, equality, and solidarity. The work of the Center for Human Rights and Democracy, one of PIN’s five program departments, is guided by the principles of integrity, tolerance, and confidentiality.

Currently, the Center operates in 4 regions — Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Latin America, North Africa, and South-East Asia — and in 20 countries. We support individuals, grassroots initiatives, and established civil society organizations (CSOs) in their efforts to defend freedom and human rights.

Our priority programs include:

  • Protection of human rights defenders
  • Capacity building for civil society and media
  • International advocacy

Our work is guided by a partnership approach: programs and activities are developed by listening to civil society actors on the ground and identifying a niche or gap that we can help fill.
