The Institute began its activities in 1996 and was officially registered in 2012 as an association aimed at engaging Ukrainians in democratic transformation in the country. In 2004, the Institute became one of the founding organizations of the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union.

The Institute’s growth accelerated during the Euromaidan, when it actively monitored the situation and provided legal assistance to activists. After the Revolution of Dignity, the Institute focused its efforts on building citizens’ capacity for self-organization. A vivid example of this is the “Active Community” initiative, launched by the Institute’s activists to promote citizen participation in decision-making processes and support reforms throughout the country.

We view Ukrainian citizens as active and responsible builders of their communities and the country as a whole, fostering healthy dialogue and advancing community development through democratic tools.
