The Belarusian Human Rights House assists activists working to promote human rights and democracy in Belarus. It opened in Vilnius, Lithuania in 2007 as a result of joint efforts by human rights NGOs in Belarus and the Human Rights House Foundation. Prior to the establishment of the Belarusian Human Rights House, the Human Rights House Foundation and leading members of the HRH Network, including the Helsinki Foundation in Warsaw, the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, and Norwegian PEN, worked for several years in cooperation with Belarusian rights organizations. The organization, which provides human rights defenders, journalists and others with rights trainings and space for meetings and events, has been called “an island of liberty” by Belarusian human rights defenders.
