ZARA – Zivilcourage und Anti-Rassismus-Arbeit (Civil Courage and Anti-Racism Work) is an Austrian anti-racism NGO founded in 1999. Its mission is to strengthen civil courage, combat all forms of racism and to promote the equal treatment of all human beings residing in Austria, regardless of ones skin colour, language, appearance, religion, citizenship and/or origin. ZARAs mandate is shared along three pillars:

  1. The support of victims of discrimination
  2. Awareness-raising through public information
  3. Prevention.

ZARA provides information, support and legal advice to people who are confronted with racism. Since January 2000, ZARA has operated its Counselling Service where victims and witnesses of racism in Austria can report cases and are provided with support and assistance by socially and legally trained counsellors. After initiating and implementing many activities against cyber hate, ZARA expanded its portfolio in 2017, by setting up the Beratungsstelle #GegenHassimNetz (Counselling Service against Online Hate), which helps internet users that are affected by hate speech, smear campaigns and cyberbullying to take action against harmful and discriminatory online content. In February 2014, ZARA founded a non-profit limited liability company, ZARA Training, which organises workshops and courses on diversity, civil courage and online hate.

ZARA aims at enhancing public awareness of discrimination and racism by implementing campaigns and educational measures for different target audiences (e. g.: media, civil servants, policy makers, students, teachers and many more). ZARA also organises activities and publishes information on racism (e. g.: the annual Racism Report – available in English) and related issues. ZARAs public relations work also comprises lobbying for the development and improvement of anti-discrimination legislation, forging media relations as well as running awareness-raising campaigns.
